Summer 2020 Professional Development Series

The Art & Design Education Professional Development Series allows K-12 teachers, librarians, and teaching artists to earn Continuing Education Contact Hours while working with VCFA’s Art & Design Education faculty.

These online workshops may be taken individually or as a 25-hour series. Participation in the full series is highly encouraged. Series tuition: $550

Correspondence and Care as Artful Activism

Faculty: Christina Hanawalt and Brooke Hofsess

In this workshop, we will explore how everyday practices of mailing and gifting become artful activism. Participants will be introduced to the work of contemporary artists and innovative art education practices, and will engage in art-making as inspiration for teaching and activism. (~10 hours) Tuition: $250

Teaching Media and Visual Literacy

Faculty: Elizabeth Patton

This workshop presents the theoretical framework, instructional strategies and curriculum development needed to teach K-12 students to critically analyze media. This workshop provides an overview of the approaches and strategies for art educators to use to incorporate media and visual literacy in their teaching practice. Pre-workshop readings/activity required. (~7 hours) Tuition: $175

Makerspaces and Project-Based Learning

Faculty: Kelly Gross and Aaron Knochel 

In this workshop, we’ll discuss makerspaces using both low and high-tech resources. What does project-based learning look like? How do we develop pedagogical structures for independent self-directed learning? Possible opportunity for hands-on making. (~2 hours) Tuition: $50

Digital Fabrication and Design Thinking

Faculty: Aaron Knochel 

This workshop explores the iterative process of design thinking as it relates to interdisciplinary curricula and techniques of rapid prototyping using digital fabrication. Participants will be exposed to introductory workflows in 3D model design and 3D printing preparation with a particular emphasis on design challenges, STEAM learning, and creativity in the context of K-12 learning. (~2 hours) Tuition: $50

Differentiated Content Literacy

Faculty: Kelly Gross

In this workshop, we will talk about what content literacy looks like in the art room. Participants will learn about the Before-During-After (BDA) model for successful content literacy acquisition. Strategies for differentiating the BDA model for students with diverse learning needs including students with disabilities and English Learners will be discussed. (~2 hours) Tuition: $50

Studio Thinking and the Assessment of Learning

Faculty: Kimberly Sheridan

The Studio Thinking Framework identifies the habits of mind developed through art education and describes how they are taught.  In this workshop, we use this framework to build strong links between the artistic habits of mind we want our students to develop, our curriculum design, and how we assess whether, how and in what ways students have learned. (~2 hours) Tuition: $50
