Rethink Graphic Design at Vermont College of Fine Arts

Rethink graphic design: join our pioneering low-residency MFA program at Vermont College of Fine Arts.

The MFA in Graphic Design

Our innovative and highly-effective pedagogical model
has its roots in the progressive educational philosophies of John Dewey.

Our student-centered curriculum allows you to develop your own study plans. As a result, you grapple with issues in design that are important to you and that are in line with your particular interests, values, and goals.

Students and faculty in the graphic design program come from across the United States and around the world, gathering twice yearly on campus in Montpelier for intensive one-week residencies.

Rethink Graphic Design

Faculty and students in the program continuously rethink graphic design, by considering the role of design in our culture, the relationships between designers and their work, and the nature of education in design.

We firmly believe that design is a natural human ability and as such is inseparable from the individual’s awareness of self. This recognition of self makes learning an act of cognition, not a transferal of information.

We honor the belief that design education should not emphasize what you make, but rather, what you learn through making.
