MAT and MAADE Scholarships

Vermont College of Fine Arts recognizes the importance scholarships play in helping students meet financial needs. VCFA provides merit-based and need-based scholarships. In addition, we provide resources for, and tips on researching external scholarships.

Merit-based scholarships are earned by meeting or exceeding certain standards set by the scholarship-giver. Merit scholarships might be awarded based on academic achievement or on a combination of academics and a special talent, trait, experience, or interest. Scholarship committees meet to review all qualified candidates for merit scholarships.

Financial need-based scholarships require the submission of a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form. VCFA uses the financial results from the FAFSA to determine a student's level of financial need.

The MAT/MA in Art & Design Education program awards several program scholarships to incoming enrolled students. Merit and need-based scholarships range from $500 to $2000, and are generally awarded for the first semester of study. Some merit-based scholarships are renewable, based on academic performance and promise.

The program considers awarding the following scholarships to students who have completed their application by the priority scholarship deadline:

  • Creative Thinking, Creative Response: Transforming Communities In and Through the Arts: $2000 scholarship, awarded for 2nd year study for MAT students and incoming MA students.
  • The Florence and Alexander Langsam Scholarship, created to encourage the recruitment of minority teacher candidates of promise and support PK-12 Art & Design Education licensure: $2000 incoming semester award.
  • Eleanor Ruth Memorial ScholarshipThe Eleanor Ruth Memorial Scholarship is awarded to an MA or 2nd year MAT student who is committed to using digital photography as a means of reaching their students: to foster self expression, resilience, experimentation and personal success.
  • Promise Award: $1500 incoming semester award
  • Laguna College of Art & Design Scholarship for Excellence in the Teaching of Art: LCAD and VCFA have joined forces to provide an opportunity for students finishing their undergraduate education to begin teacher preparation. The merit based scholarship for Excellence in the Teaching of Art will provide support to a promising LCAD student whose lifetime career goal is to share his/her passion for the arts with creative children and adolescents. Application requirement: Essay outlining career goals and why you have decided to pursue a teaching career in the arts.
  • Cornish Artist, Citizen, Innovator, Educator Scholarship: Cornish and VCFA have partnered to provide an opportunity for Cornish students and alumni to begin teacher preparation. The merit based scholarship recognizes the commitment of Cornish students and alumni to teach the next generation of artists, citizens and innovators.

In addition to these named scholarships, the program awards other similar merit and need-based scholarships on a case-by-case basis. Need based scholarships require the submission of current FAFSA forms to Financial Aid Services.
