Sara Fattahi studied law at the university of Damascus and graduated from the Fine Art Institute in Damascus. She had worked as a storyboard artist and animator for several networks such as Al Jazeera Kids and SpaceToon, as well as an art director for soap operas. In 2010 she started to produce and direct her documentary films independently. She finished her first short documentary, 27 METERS, in 2013. She served as the Art Director of the gender project Estayqazat – She’s Awake (between 2014–2016), where she collaborated in researching and writing for independent short film projects and oversaw the production of several short films aimed at social awareness and change.
COMA, her first feature-length documentary, produced in 2015, was granted the Regard Neuf Award for the Best First Feature Film at Visions du Réel 2015, and the FIPRESCI Award at the Viennale 2015, and has been screened in many festivals such as MoMA’s Doc fortnight 2016, Berlin Critics’ Week 2016, São Paulo 2016. Her most recent film, CHAOS (2018), was awarded the Pardo d’oro of Cineasti del presente for the best film at 71 Locarno, the Extra-VALUE Film Award at the Viennale 2018 and the Altered States Award at the Mar del Plata Festival 2018 and has been screened at many festivals such as IDFA 2018, MoMA’s Doc Fortnight 2019. She is currently writing her fiction film CALM.
