COMMUNITY NEWS: Sharon Darrow & Marianne Murphy Rainbow A Poem
Alumnx, former MFA in Writing for Children & Young Adults faculty member, and friend of VCFA Sharon Darrow (W ’96) is celebrating the release of her latest book, Rainbow A Poem, illustrated by fellow VCFA alumnx Marianne Murphy (WCYA ’17). Darrow and Murphy would like to invite any VCFA community members in the area to their launch party on Friday, September 20th, 2024 at The Writers’ Center in Bethesda, MD.
As provided by Darrow: “Rainbow A Poem is a rhyming picture book for ages 3-8 about creating poems and having fun with words. Lively colorful and engaging illustrations enhance the poetry and lead the readers to an understanding of what a poem can be, as well as suggesting that no matter what your age, you might be a poet.”
Fellow former MFA in WCYA faculty member Uma Krishnaswami called the picture book “A delicious scoop of poetry with a dash of punny wordplay, all tied up in a loving rainbow,” and current MFA in WCYA faculty member Mary Quattlebaum highlighted that: “Darrow’s lively verse and Murphy’s vibrant art combine to create an exuberant exploration of the possibilities of poetry. This eye-popping, tongue-tickling, jazzy-snazzy book is sure to delight and inspire readers of all ages.”
Since she first started as a student at Vermont College in 1994, Sharon Darrow returned to VCFA residencies every year until 2020. She has attended over 50 VCFA residencies as a student, graduate assistant, and as a treasured VCFA faculty member. In recognition of Darrow’s dedication to the people and programs of VCFA, the MFA in Writing for Children & Young Adults program names a Darrow Lecturer at each residency and invites VCFA community members to present their work. The college and WCYA program are honored to support this collaboration between Darrow and Murphy.
