Michael ‘Mike’ Goldstein, Chair of the Vermont College of Fine Arts Board of Trustees

Dear VCFA Community,

It is with profound sadness that I share the news of the passing of Michael “Mike” Goldstein, Chair of the Vermont College of Fine Arts Board of Trustees, who died on April 26, 2025, after a brief illness.

Mike was more than a board chair; he was a steadfast champion of our mission, a wise and compassionate leader, and a true friend to this institution. He was, in every sense of the word, a mensch—someone who embodied integrity, kindness, and a deep commitment to the well-being of others. His immeasurable service to VCFA, particularly during some of the most pivotal and transformative moments in our history, has left an indelible mark on our community.

It was Mike’s extraordinary guidance and determination that allowed us to envision a future when others could not. His concept of affiliation—ensuring that VCFA would remain an independent institution while aligning with a like-minded partner—preserved our identity and safeguarded our mission. Thanks to Mike, VCFA is not only still here, but positioned for a vibrant future.

Born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, Mike carried the values of his upbringing throughout his life. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, and his warmth and generosity extended to all who knew him. His passion for education and the arts was evident in his leadership at VCFA and in his broader community involvement.

Those who served alongside Mike witnessed his profound impact firsthand. As Chebon Marshall, Vice Chair of the Board, shared:

“Mike led with integrity, kindness, and courage. He never shied away from hard decisions, but he always made them with compassion and thoughtfulness. His belief in the power of the arts and in VCFA’s mission was unwavering, and his leadership was a beacon for all of us.”

In the coming weeks, we will find ways to celebrate Mike’s life and contributions more formally, and we will share those plans with you. For now, I invite you to join me in holding Mike’s family, loved ones, and all who knew and admired him in our hearts.

Mike’s loss is deeply personal to many of us, and together, we will carry forward his spirit of service, creativity, and compassion as we continue the work he so passionately supported.

With deepest sympathy,
Andrew Ramsammy
