Artist Talk with Artist-in-Residence, Mario Ybarra Jr.

Mario Ybarra Jr. is a Mexican-American, conceptual artist born and raised in Los Angeles. His artwork operates as examinations of excluded social norms, often examining complete environments, histories and narratives. He received an MFA from the University of California Irvine and a BFA from Otis College of Art and Design. He has been featured in many local, national, and international exhibitions/fairs, including the 2008 Whitney Biennial, the Tate Museum in London, at the Orange County Museum of Art, Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, MOCA Los Angeles, MOCA Detroit, the ICA Boston, Museo De Cervantez Spain, ARCO Fair 2011 and 2013, LACMA, the Art Institute of Chicago, among others. In 2002, in partnership with his wife Karla Diaz, he co-founded Slanguage—an artist-run space/collective in Los Angeles that hosted art exhibitions, residencies, and programming for youth and adults. He has been featured as a speaker in many national and international venues including most notably at the Creative Summit in New York, Art Pace San Antonio, and at the ICA in Boston.
Of Walks and Waterbooks: Some Curatorial Projects with Visiting Scholar Gunalan Nadarajan

For over two decades now, Guna’s curatorial practice has emphasized a generative and collaborative approach to produce site and culturally specific projects achieving untoward outcomes and interpretations. In addition to conventional art exhibitions, he has developed curatorial projects enabling collaborations between artists, scientists, and technology researchers to create novel and experimental works. The ways in which this curatorial approach is reflected as well as problematized through a number of exhibitions presented in multiple countries/cultures will be discussed.
Gunalan Nadarajan, an art theorist and curator working at the intersections of art, science, and technology, is Dean and Professor at the Penny W. Stamps School of Art and Design at the University of Michigan.
He is active in the development of media arts internationally and has also served as an advisor on creative aspects of digital arts and culture to the UNESCO and the Smithsonian Institution. He has served on the committee for the Integration of STEM, Humanities and Arts in Higher Education Report of The Board on Higher Education and Workforce (BHEW) of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, USA. In 2004, he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Art.
Visiting Artist Presentation with B. Wurtz
B. will discuss his lifetime of making art, including several recent exhibitions.

B. Wurtz was born in 1948 in Pasadena, California, and lives and works in New York. In 2015, he was the subject of a retrospective exhibition at BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art, Gateshead, United Kingdom. In 2016, the exhibition traveled to La Casa Encendida, Madrid. He has had additional solo exhibitions at Kunstverein Freiburg; White Flag Projects, St. Louis; and Gallery 400, University of Illinois at Chicago. His work has been included in group exhibitions at MoMA PS1, New York; Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; and Musée d’Art Contemporain de Lyon.
