Multiple concerts and events featuring music written by VCFA students and performed by world-class musicians fill the week. All events are open to the public and free of charge.

CONCERTS

VCFA hosts three different ensembles this winter, premiering pieces written by our MFA in Music Composition students that reflect a widely versatile cross-section of approaches to new music. The ensembles are:

The City of Tomorrow wind quintet, featuring Elise Blatchford, flute; Rane Moore, clarinets; Stuart Breczinski, oboe and English horn; Nanci Belmont, bassoon; and Leander Star, French horn.

Anna’s Ghost, featuring Brian Adler, percussion; Ken Thomson, saxophone and clarinet; Red Wierenga, piano, accordion, and rise; and Jim Whitney, bass.

invoke quartet, featuring Nick Montopoli, violin and banjo; Zachariah Matteson, violin; Karl Mitze, viola and mandolin; Geoff Manyin, cello. (image above)

FILM and MEDIA MUSIC FESTIVAL

  • Sunday, February 10, 8 p.m., Noble Lounge

In visual media, music is often the secret partner in storytelling, embodying the internal states of the characters in the narrative. This event will feature a variety of approaches to the marriage of music to picture, as offered by VCFA students, faculty and alumnx—from fiction films, to animation, video art, webisodes, documentaries, game scores, and jingles. The intent is to explore and celebrate the diversity of music-to-picture relationships.

ELECTRONIC MUSIC SHOWCASE 

  • Monday, February 11, 8 p.m.: Alumnx Hall

An evening of electronic sound and multimedia; VCFA students and faculty perform new work for instruments with live electronic sound and video.

SONGWRITING SHOWCASE

  • Friday, February 15, 8 p.m., College Hall Gallery

Friday evening, we’ll partner with Café Anna (cash bar) to host the Songwriting Showcase, highlighting the diverse songwriting and performing talents of the students, alumnx, and faculty of VCFA’s MFA in Music Composition.
