Profile
Rafael Attias (Providence, RI) is a professional designer, filmmaker, musician, fine artist, luthier, curator, and educator.
He left his native home of Venezuela to study at Rhode Island School of Design. He has worked as a graphic designer and art director with several prominent Providence and Boston firms. Throughout his years at RISD and to this date, Attias has immersed himself in the arts, creating work for design clients, and in art-world new media contexts. His personal work has transitioned from traditional abstract paintings into experiments in audio/visual narratives, film, musical instrument building, soundtrack scores, sculptural installations, and performances.
Recently, he served as the Program Director for Pixilerations, a yearly new media showcase that investigates the state of new media arts through installations, concert performances, and film/video screenings. His work has been shown in New York City, Miami, Providence, Cambridge, and Dublin, Ireland. Attias has been faculty at Rhode Island School of Design since 1998. He balances a professional life of art and design with an academic career, finding the combination mutually beneficial and dynamic. In 2001, he was a candidate for the Award for Excellence in Teaching at RISD.
