Profile

A.R. Capetta (all pronouns) writes about magic, science, weirdness, mystery, and the places where they meet. Their eight YA novels include The Lost Coast, The Brilliant Death, Echo After Echo, and the bestselling Once & Future series, a finalist for the New England Book Award co-authored with A.R.’s spouse and fellow WCYA faculty member Cory McCarthy.

A.R.’s novels have been featured on the ALA Rainbow List, the Locus Recommended Reading List, Booklist’s Top 10 SFF/Horror Children’s Literature of the Year, and have been chosen as Junior Library Guild selections, Kirkus Best Book of the Year, and BEA Buzz Book, among others. Forthcoming works include The Heartbreak Bakery, a novel with recipes, as well as a few other secret projects.

In addition to short stories and serial fiction for young readers, A.R. has published academic work in the Journal of Creative Writing Studies in an area of particular fascination: the science of storytelling. As a writing instructor, they co-founded the Rainbow Writers Workshop, the first event of its kind for LGBTQIAP+ writers of kidlit and YA.
