Visiting writer Fran Wilde will present a lecture titled “Portal Narratives—Beyond Escape” on Monday, January 17, from 5–6 pm ET as part of the MFA in Writing for Children & Young Adults program’s winter residency:
“Portal narratives, from The Phantom Tollbooth to Aru Shah and the End of Time and beyond, are about much more than escaping to a fantastical world. They are problem-solving stories, where a child (or several) begins to figure out how to fix a problem in their world, through the mechanics of the fantastic. We’ll look at some of the hows and whys of this process, and maybe draw a few maps to new worlds ourselves.”
