Who were the Samnites? What did their language sound like? What were their musical traditions? Where does the musical term forte come from? What does rock music have to do with it? These questions and more will be examined in Music is a Time Machine. This series of lecture-recitals, started by Antonio Forte in Collemacchia, Italy, presents both the creative processes and ongoing research on the music and culture of the ancient, pre-Roman people known as the Samnites. Equal parts travelogue, music composition, linguistic archaeology, and experimental ethnomusicology, this project uses music as a vehicle to unearth the “dead” Oscan language, the origin stories of the Samnites, and even the etymology of the word Italy.
Join VCFA alumnx Antonio Forte (MC ’21) for a musical conversation stretching across millennia, December 20 at 7:00 pm.
