Faculty member Louise Hawes will present a lecture titled “GRANDMA SHARK, WHAT BIG TEETH YOU HAVE! Or, Everything We’ve Gotten Wrong about Aging and How to Make It Write” on Sunday, July 10, from 4:30–5:30 pm ET as part of the MFA in Writing for Children & Young Adults program’s summer residency:
“We are all aging from the day we’re born. As writers for young readers, we’re well aware of how ageism can affect children and teens; how they can be dismissed or stereotyped, condescended to or bossed around, simply because they’re “not old enough.” But how many of us bring a similar awareness to people on the other end of the aging spectrum? Or to the older characters on the periphery of our stories? Let’s explore the way ageism figures in our culture, in publishing, and in our own writing. And then? Let’s do something about it!”
