What makes a good short film? And how do you create a good life for your short after it’s done? Join producer Martha Gregory (F ’16) as she talks about the important role a short film can play in a filmmaker’s career as well as her work with the UFO Short Film Lab which supports a cohort of early career filmmakers as they each make two short films over the course of 18 months. She’ll also discuss the broader artist support ecosystem and ways to effectively position yourself when applying for funding or artist programs.

Bio: Martha Gregory is co-director of UFO, a filmmaker support organization with programs at BAM and in the Catskills. She is also an independent producer of both fiction and nonfiction films. She recently produced Shaun Leonardo’s We Went Undefeated, a multichannel installation and film which opened at the Andrew Rafacz Gallery in September 2024. She Executive Produced Chloe Abraham’s The Taste of Mango (Oscilloscope and POV) which premiered at TRUE/FALSE 2023 and won Best Documentary at BFI as well as Billy Luther’s Frybread Face and Me (ARRAY) which premiered at SXSW 2023. Her own short doc, Three Red Sweaters, screened around the world and is a Vimeo Staff Pick. She has taught film courses at Kenyon College in Ohio, and Fashion Institute of Technology and School of Visual Art in New York and she got her MFA in 2016 from Vermont College of Fine Arts.
