7:00 pm - 8:30 pm EDT

Join VCFA alumnx Keith Kolecki (F ‘19) for an insider’s look at building a lasting career in the film industry’s art department—a world where storytelling comes to life through design, props, and set decoration. With over 20 years in the industry, including 17 as an IATSE studio mechanic, Keith has worked on major motion pictures, television series, and nationally broadcast commercials, and currently works in set decoration on an FX series.
For VCFA students and alumni, this lecture will offer a practical and candid discussion about translating an artistic education into a sustainable career. Keith will break down what the art department does, the collaboration between designers, directors, and crew, and the daily realities of working on set. Beyond craft and technique, this talk will dive into the critical challenge of work-life balance in a demanding industry—how to protect your creative energy, navigate long hours, and avoid burnout while continuing to grow as an artist and filmmaker.
Keith Kolecki has worked in film and television production for over 20 years, building a career across multiple departments. He began as a production assistant and gained experience in the camera department before transitioning to the art department, where he has spent the past 17 years as an IATSE studio mechanic. His work spans major motion pictures, television series, and nationally broadcast commercials.
In addition to his work behind the scenes, Keith is a filmmaker, having created several short films and always developing his next project. He is a graduate of VCFA and also studied at Columbia College Chicago and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
