Damon Davis awarded VCFA President’s Fellowship for New Voices in Film
Award-winning multidisciplinary artist Damon Davis has been named the inaugural recipient of a new full-tuition scholarship, the President’s Fellowship for New Voices in Film.
Davis co-directed and produced the 2017 documentary feature WHOSE STREETS?, which earned widespread critical acclaim.
“The President’s Fellowship for New Voices in Film represents VCFA’s support and commitment to fostering diverse emerging filmmakers, especially ones as groundbreaking as Damon. I eagerly look forward to seeing the work he produces at VCFA over the next two years,” said President Thomas Christopher Greene.
WHOSE STREETS? follows activists and mourners after the 2014 police killing of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Mo. The film has been nominated for a Critic’s Choice Award, Gotham Award and NAACP Image Award. Filmmaker Magazine selected Davis and co-director Sabaah Folayan for their “25 New Faces of Independent Film 2016.” Davis, who resides in St. Louis, Mo., is a 2015 Firelight Media Producers Lab Fellow; a 2016 Sundance Institute Music and Sound Design Lab Fellow at Skywalker Sound; a 2017 TED Fellow; and a 2017 Root100 Honoree. He has artwork in the permanent collection at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture, and has exhibited at the Museum of Contemporary African Diaspora Arts (MoCADA) in Brooklyn and the San Diego Contemporary Museum of Art. A STORY TO TELL, a 2013 documentary short that profiles Davis and his work, won a Mid-America Emmy Award.
