Magoon is an award-winning author of fiction and non-fiction for middle grade and young adult readers, including How It Went Down, a 2015 Coretta Scott King Honor Book. Now on the faculty of VCFA, she is also an alumna of the MFA in Writing for Children and Young Adults program.

The NAACP Image Awards celebrate the accomplishments of people of color in the fields of television, music, literature, and film and also honor individuals or groups who promote social justice through creative endeavors.
