Kathi Appelt’s When Otis Courted Mama, illustrated by Jill McElmurry, was named a Zolotow Award honor book. In a starred review, School Library Journal predicted that “this adorable, humble tale of how a young coyote copes with divorced parents will win children’s hearts.”
Miss Hazeltine’s Home for Shy and Fearful Cats, by Alicia Potter ’05 and illustrated by Birgitta Sif, was on this year’s list of highly commended books. This humorous tale of timid kitten Crumb was also named to the American Booksellers Association’s Summer 2015 Top Ten Indie Kids’ List.
Given by the Cooperative Children’s Book Center at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, the Charlotte Zolotow Award honors the work of distinguished children’s book editor and author Charlotte Zolotow. In addition to this year’s winner, Drum Dream Girl by Margarita Engle, five honor books and ten highly commended titles were chosen.
