Rita Williams-Garcia won the Coretta Scott King Book Award, which recognizes an African American author and illustrator of outstanding books for children and young adults. Her book, Gone Crazy in Alabama, took home the author award. Gone Crazy in Alabama was published by Amistad, an imprint of HarperCollins Publishers.

In the same category, Kekla Magoon, who is also a VCFA alumna, earned an honor for her work X: A Novel that she wrote with Ilyasah Shabazz. X was published by Candlewick Press.

Rita and Kekla earned their awards on the first day of the MFA in Writing for Children & Young Adult’s 2016 winter residency. Congratulations to both!
