How will this change affect my VCFA degree?

This change will not affect degrees previously conferred by any of VCFA’s academic programs. VCFA’s alumnx and their education remains the top priority of our acclaimed degree programs, and future degrees will continue to be conferred by VCFA.

How will this change affect the quality of education for VCFA students and postgraduate study for alumnx?

The importance of arts education has never been more pressing. We believe this change will allow VCFA to greatly enhance the quality of education our programs provide, by offering—for the first time—full campus amenities that truly support the standards of excellence embodied in our programs. This change provides VCFA with the opportunity to invest our resources in our community, rather than in maintaining an underutilized physical asset.

This reimagining of the VCFA residency experience will offer a wide range of expanded programming and curricular offerings for both VCFA students and alumnx while also nurturing the core of what makes VCFA such a special place to learn and create.

What will happen with conferences and retreats, like the Postgraduate Writers' Conference, Alumnx Mini-Residency, and the Novel Retreats? How will the Colorado College campus serve VCFA alumnx?

VCFA will work directly with those responsible for these programs to explore continued engagement opportunities. We plan to explore relocating these offerings to Colorado College or other conference and retreat centers off campus.

What impact will this change have on library services?

Library services and staff will remain in place. Interlibrary loan services, residency instructional and support services, and other library services will continue. Beginning in summer 2023, library services and staff will operate through the Colorado College Library during summer residencies and through the VCFA offices in Montpelier at other times of the year. Alumnx will continue to have access to the VCFA library’s online services.

Will I be able to visit summer residencies on the Colorado College campus?

Yes. VCFA welcomes members of the alumnx community to visit the summer residencies at Colorado College. The Office of Institutional Advancement’s regular communications will include opportunities for alumnx to engage with public events across programs, as well as invitations to alumnx-specific programming we plan to offer alongside the residency content.

What opportunities will there be for alumnx to engage with new interdisciplinary or postgraduate work across programs?

Alumnx may visit residences and attend public events offered by any of VCFA’s six academic programs. Alumnx will also have an opportunity to attend alumnx-specific residency events and programming.

How does VCFA plan to address community concerns regarding diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging for LGBTQIA+ and BIPOC students, faculty, staff, and alumnx in Colorado Springs?

A significant factor in our decision to pursue an agreement with Colorado College was their long standing commitment to anti-racism and shared values concerning diversity and inclusion.

At present, VCFA leadership is in communication with leadership at Colorado College so you can hear directly from them about CC faculty, student, and staff experiences in the surrounding Colorado Springs community, and also how we can best connect students, faculty, staff, and alumnx to the appropriate resources needed to facilitate building a sense of community belonging while in Colorado Springs. We will provide further updates as we receive additional  information and resources.

How do I continue to support VCFA?

Vermont College of Fine Arts is privileged to have alumnx and donors who see the immediate impacts of financially supporting the college. By investing in this innovative change, donor contributions will directly support VCFA’s mission and values. This change will also allow VCFA to fully align our fundraising priorities with the strategic priorities of the college: supporting our academic programs and student scholarships, as well as the college’s commitment to equity and empowerment, lifelong support for our alumnx, and the Center for Arts + Social Justice at VCFA.

How do I continue to recommend VCFA to prospective students?

VCFA alumnx are the college’s greatest ambassadors, and we are grateful for the engagement and support of alums who continue to recommend our MFA programs to prospective students.
