Hunger Mountain

Hunger MountainHunger Mountain is an annual print journal of the arts, housed at Vermont College of Fine Arts. We publish fiction, poetry, creative nonfiction, visual art, young adult and children’s writing, and literary miscellany. Our print issue comes out annually in the spring. Additional content—reviews, interviews, craft essays, selections from the print journal, and prize winners—is published throughout the year at our online companion, Ephemeral Artery.

Our mission is to cultivate engagement with and conversation about the arts by publishing high-quality, innovative literary and visual art by both established and emerging artists, and by offering opportunities for interactivity and discourse.

VCFA offers a paid Hunger Mountain Fellowship for a student in the Writing & Publishing program, and all Writing & Publishing students edit the journal in their Publishing & Fieldwork class.

Past contributors include Pinckney Benedict, Ron Carlson, Hayden Carruth, Kwame Dawes, Matthew Dickman, Mark Doty, Rita Dove, Terrance Hayes, Alice Hoffman, Pam Houston, Maxine Kumin, Dorianne Laux, Bret Lott, Michael Martone, Naomi Shihab Nye, Tomaž Šalamun, Charles Simic, James Tate, Jean Valentine, and too many writers to name.

Contributors to Hunger Mountain have received and been nominated for numerous accolades, among them MacArthur Fellowship Grants, Guggenheim Fellowships, Pushcart Prizes, PEN/O’Henry Prizes, and National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship in Fiction.
