The MFA in Writing & Publishing is a two-year residency at Vermont College of Fine Arts. We give writing students the tools to write books and to survive in their cultural scene long after graduation.

The MFA in Writing & Publishing celebrates cross-genre and multi-disciplinary coursework. We offer concentrations in poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction, with possible studies in stage & screen and young adult literature. Our classes are mixed-genre, and students can opt for a hybrid-genre thesis.

Students immerse themselves in workshops and seminars designed to improve their craft with faculty including Matthew Dickman, Mary Ruefle, Trinie Dalton, Jensen Beach, Porochista Khakpour, Elizabeth Powell, and screenwriter and director Tim Kirkman.

In our yearlong Publishing & Fieldwork course, students make a publication from start to finish, collaborating as an editorial team, and going regularly into the “field” to learn from agents, editors, publishers, designers, and more.

Writing & Publishing students gain additional experience in the field from our Internship and Directed Study requirements. Students might work at VCFA’s literary magazine Hunger Mountain, TA at local colleges, learn the ins and outs of letterpress art, or assist in creative writing classes at Montpelier High School, just to name a few possibilities. Throughout their two years in Vermont, students are always exploring the career possibilities available to writers: editing, publishing, teaching, working in the nonprofit arts scene, and so many others.
