MFA in Writing for Children & Young Adults: Develop Your Writing Passion

The first Master of Fine Arts program in the country to focus exclusively on writing for young readers, the MFA in Writing for Children & Young Adults was founded in 1997 and quickly attracted the attention of accomplished writers and publishers around the country.

The MFA in Writing for Children & Young Adults program at Vermont College of Fine Arts allows students to earn a 64-credit MFA degree over a period of two years through a combination of ten-day, intensive, on-campus residencies on our campus in beautiful Montpelier, Vermont followed by six-month semesters of self-created, independent study, supported and guided by a faculty mentor.

A semester’s study may focus on a particular area such as picture book, middle grade, or young adult and include in-depth reading and critical writing of the wider field, including poetry and nonfiction. Our affordable program allows you to get your MFA without leaving your life, propelling you into the next phase of your writing life.

Faculty and alumni of the MFA in Writing for Children & Young Adults (WCYA) share their thoughts about why this program is essential to writers who want a rich and dynamic writing life.

Read what alumni and faculty have to say:

  • "VCFA is the only place I know where people care so much about children’s books that they are still discussing them at 2:00 a.m."
  • "VCFA is sitting in one of those darkened rooms, listening to a reading, and plunging into the deep despair of knowing that I will never, ever be able to write anything anywhere near that wonderful. And then thinking, 'But… wait. If she can do it, maybe I can too. What if I tried just a bit harder? What if I pushed my talent just a bit more?'"
  • "The program equipped me with the tools and the support to take each story I write as far as it can go and to start thinking of myself as a writer. It was one of the best decisions I ever made."
