Matthew Monk

Profile

Matthew Monk is a designer, painter, and educator in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

In his book design practice, his clients include The National Gallery of Art, Yale University Press, Harvard University Graduate School of Design, Metropolis Books, The Museum of Art at Rhode Island School of Design, and Wellesley College. His work has earned numerous awards and has appeared in Print, Communication Arts, Graphis, ID, Metropolis, and AIGA 50 Books/50 Covers, among others.

In his painting, Monk explores systems, typography, and narrative through experimental collage and mixed media projects involving an expansive range of accretive and subtractive processes. In education, Monk’s interest in broadening the language of art and design leads him to draw from disciplines such as painting and sculpture, conceptual art, architecture, design, performing arts, literature, science, and philosophy. He synthesizes a strong commitment to experimentation and exploration with deep respect for the history and traditions of art and design. Monk, former professor of Graphic Design at Rhode Island School of Design from 1993 to 2012, is the founding faculty chair of the MFA in Graphic Design Program at Vermont College of Fine Arts.

Monk holds an undergraduate degree in graphic design from North Carolina State University, and an MFA in graphic design from Rhode Island School of Design.
