Dr. Peter Smith (Santa Fe, NM) is currently the Orkand Chair, Professor of Innovative Practices in Higher Education, at the University of Maryland University College.
He was founding president of the Open College at Kaplan University. He has served on the VCFA Board since the college’s early days. Prior to that, he served as the founding president of the Community College of Vermont, in the Vermont State Senate, as Lt. Governor, and as Vermont’s Congressman. Since leaving the Congress, Dr. Smith has served as the Dean of the Graduate School of Education at George Washington University, as founding president of Cal State Monterey Bay, and as ADG for Education at UNESCO in Paris. The author of several books on innovation in higher education, Smith also currently serves on several higher education policy boards.
