Faculty member Laura Shovan will present a lecture titled “She Rides Off into the Sunset” on Wednesday, July 13, from 4:30–5:30 pm ET as part of the MFA in Writing for Children & Young Adults program’s summer residency:

“Come with me on a mission to break down the classic girl quest model. You know the one, where the female-identifying protagonist experiences a strange world filled with wonders, meets fascinating people and creatures, learns to rely on her inner resources… but all she really wants is to go home to Auntie Em. We’ll look at patterns in the stories of Dorothy, Alice, Coraline, and Chihiro in order to better understand (and write) novels that disrupt this narrative—books where the heroine’s adventure doesn’t end with ‘The End.’”
