Current Student in the MFA in Film Offers an Insider View to the Residency Experience

Current student in the new MFA in Film at Vermont College of Fine Arts offers an insider's view of the residency experience.

Through his article, "Residency Diary: The MFA in Film Program at Vermont College of Fine Arts", Rand illustrates what makes the low-residency MFA in Film—the first of its kind in the nation—a powerful program. Rand writes, "While it was never my intention to chase this MFA, I’m now certain this path will lead me to unexpected places. You don’t know what you don’t know, and you haven’t been where you haven’t been, yet. In just one short week an amazing thing has happened."

In a day-by-day narrative, Rand reveals the inner workings of a residency: the week-long, intensive stay on VCFA's campus, full of group discussions, presentations, workshops, field trips, screenings, and constant dialogue with fellow students, faculty, staff and the Montpelier community.

The MFA in Film is the newest of the College's MFA programs. As the only college devoted exclusively to fine arts education, Vermont College of Fine Arts, offers artists and writers a transformative and progressive educational experience through its acclaimed low-residency model. Twice a year, students and faculty gather on the historic Montpelier campus for intense and invigorating seven-to-ten day residencies.
