MFA in Writing

Winter Residency in Puerto Rico

The Puerto Rico residency is scheduled at the same time as the Vermont residency and is open to all but those entering their first semester, including alumni and postgraduate writers. The group typically consists of 14–18 people, including two faculty members.

Students participate in workshops and hear lectures and readings that relate to the rich history and culture of Puerto Rico. While in Old San Juan, our groups visit the House of the Book, El Morrow fort, Poets Passage, and meet local authors, which have included Urayoán Noel and Yolando Arroyo, as well as spending an evening at the home of author Hector Feliciano.

In El Yunque, students have the opportunity to put the inspiration that occurs during this unique experience to work in generative writing sessions. They are also able to learn about the rainforest’s diverse plant and animal life with a local guide.
