Abby Frucht, Faculty, MFA in Writing

Abby Frucht captured these images as an accompaniment to her essay, My First Time, which tells the story of her first notebook of poems, when she was nine years old. It was torn and destroyed by neighborhood boys.

The images resonated with Abby as they speak to the feelings of being a writer: "the feeling that once something is written and in print, it no longer belongs to me, the feeling that the person I was when I wrote it cannot exactly be reclaimed, the feeling that my life as a mother, friend, teacher, reader, adventure seeker etc., is nothing if not more important to me than the things that I write, and the feeling that one of my goals as a teacher is to encourage, as part of being a writer, just simply being alive in the world."
