Uma Krishnaswami, Faculty, VCFA Writing for Children & Young Adults Program

Uma Krishnaswami is the author of over twenty books for children, from picture books (including Out of the Way! Out of the Way!, The Girl of the Wish Garden, and Monsoon), through novels for young readers (The Grand Plan to Fix Everything and The Problem with Being Slightly Heroic).

Her books have been published in twelve languages and have been picked for CCBC Choices, Parents’ Choice, IRA’s Notable Books for a Global Society, the Scientific American Young Readers’ Book Award, Bank Street Best Books of the Year and the Paterson Prize. Uma has been described as “a major voice in the sharing of international and multicultural viewpoints in children's literature.” Her chapter book, Book Uncle and Me, won the 2013 Crossword Children’s Writing Award in India and the Scholastic Asian Book Award. It is soon to be published by Groundwood Books in a North American edition. Uma is an invited speaker at book festivals and schools in the US, Singapore, India, and Hong Kong. She currently has books under contract with Atheneum, Lee & Low, and Groundwood Books. Her critical writing has been published in Bookbird and The Horn Book.
