Student Garrett Steele on scoring music to animation

Garrett Steele discusses developing a new score to the 1912 animated short film “How a Mosquito Operates,” which is one of the earliest animated films of record and directed by animator Winsor McKay.

From Garrett:

"In 1912, Winsor McKay adapted one of his comic strips into an early cartoon. As someone who grew up in Arkansas, the surreal, frustrating short about a mosquito resonated with me. Scored for marimba, glockenspiel, clay drum, the piece uses a series of slow, odd grooves to accentuate the action."
