"0689" by Marjorie Halloran (’15)

0689, which was performed during the Winter 2015 residency, tells the story of experiencing a major earthquake in San Francisco.

The piece, for SATB and electronics, begins in 1906, and through news articles, stories, and poetry, takes the listener through time to 1989. These two earthquakes (San Francisco, April 1906; and Loma Prieta, October 1989) and their subsequent fires impacted the lives of thousands of Bay Area residents.

The piece uses text from poetry, news reports, and anecdotes from many witnesses. 0689 is dedicated to those who lost their homes, friends, family, or lives to these tragedies.
