Matthew Monk is a designer, artist, and educator with twenty years of experience in collegiate teaching and administration. A professor of Graphic Design at Rhode Island School of Design from 1993 to 2012, Matt is the founding faculty chair of the MFA in Graphic Design Program at VCFA, and currently serves on the faculty of that program. He joined VCFA as Academic Dean in 2012.
Matt was drawn to VCFA because of its strong academic programs and unique student-centered pedagogical model. When invited to create the Graphic Design program at VCFA in 2011, Matt was surprised to discover similarities between his own educational philosophies and those of the influential educator and Vermonter, John Dewey. “Education is not preparation for life,” Dewey once wrote, “education is life itself.” After nearly two decades teaching art and design in a more conventional academic setting, Matt was thrilled to have the opportunity to observe, understand, and help enhance how VCFA’s six academic programs apply the progressive, student-centered pedagogy inspired by Dewey.
In his painting, Matt explores systems, typography, and narrative through experimental collage and mixed media projects involving an expansive range of accretive and subtractive processes. In his book design practice, his clients include The National Gallery of Art, Yale University Press, Harvard University Graduate School of Design, Metropolis Books, The Museum of Art at Rhode Island School of Design, and Wellesley College. His work has earned numerous awards and has appeared in Print, Communication Arts, Graphis, ID, Metropolis, and AIGA 50 Books/50 Covers, among others. Matt holds an undergraduate degree in Graphic Design from North Carolina State University, an MFA in Graphic Design from Rhode Island School of Design, and a collegiate teaching certificate from Brown University.
"VCFA's student-centered educational model feels just right to me as an educator. After nearly two decades teaching art and design in a more conventional academic setting, I am thrilled to have the opportunity to observe, understand, and help enhance how our remarkable academic programs apply VCFA's unique and successful pedagogy."
